Mother Mother + Yoko Casionos

Kelly, our Kelowna Konnection, witnessed the mad rock-skillz of Mother Mother and the Yoko Casionos unfold at Doc Willoughby's a couple nights ago.

Now it's our turn. They're playing at the Broken City tomorrow night (February 27, 2007). I don't think we have a choice. Be there.

Dry as the desert

Patrick, incorrigible hipster and Beetroot contributor writes:

"oh noes, looks like you got pwned by your own indie-cisiveness"

Bad news friends, remember how excited we were over the lineup for Coachella 2007. Well, it looks like most tickets (3-day passes and single day tickets for Saturday and Sunday) are sold-out. Who knew that the drawing power of RATATAT and Willie Nelson was so huge?

I guess there's always a chance you'll find something reasonable on ebay or craigslist. Maybe your uncle has a friend who knows the roadie for the The Red Hot Chili Peppers' barber. Although CJSW doesn't condone the black market, there may be a certain number of available tickets at the venue.

If you absolutely must see Bjork and The Arcade Fire, there's Sasquatch. As a matter of fact, they just released the big lineup and ticket prices for this year's festival. If you need to know more about music holidays, check out the cover article in this week's FFWD. Written by CJSW's all-star - Aubrey.

Deerhoof Interview Alert

As promised, the Deerhoof interview that I talked about a few days ago is finally in a state suitable for being played on-air. I was not able to pare it down to 5-10 minutes, so it will probably turn into an epic six-part spotlight on the eccentric-electric-eclectic performers featuring music from a few of their albums: Reveille, Milk Man, Runners Four, and Friend Opportunity.

Hear Greg Saunier wax philosophical about Quizno's, songwriting, his first massage, and album leakage on the internet:

Musings for Valentine's Day <3

Jeanne, from the "Yeah... What She Said" gang (Mondays 8:30 - 9:00 PM), writes:

Just listening to "Into The Deep" at 4:18 a.m on Valentine's Day Morning. I've been up all night doing assignments -- it's a writer's life -- and I don't know if I actually have anything insightful to say about love or life.

What are lonely hearts up to lately anyway?

I can say I'm part of that crowd, but what's there to do except just keep on with what I'm doing -- that's enjoying life at my own pace and trying not to care too much about what other people think.

Listening to love songs at night with no one else around helps me pass time while buried in deep snow.

It's no wonder some people feel particularly blue during the winter months. There doesn't seem to be any possibility of life when you look outside, but after winter, comes spring...

A heavy snowfall is supposed to signify a good year to come.

It was what one woman wrote to a man who lived half a world away.

I saw it on the T.V. screen. They eventually got together, but not without a lot of trouble in between. People talk about climbing mountains and crossing deserts for the ones they love. It might not seem so far-fetched if you really thought about it.

We celebrate Black History Month in February. Local writer and filmmaker Cheryl Foggo recently made a presentation on the Underground Railroad and how her own family came to settle in central Alberta with other black settlers in the early 20th century.

People journeyed a long way to find life, freedom, and dignity for themselves, their friends and their families.

Black History Month: Major Taylor

CJSW supporter, fitness enthusiast, and curator of the speed theory cycling team blog - Rob - has given us express permission to repost this fascinating vignette of african-american history. Thank you very much!

As some of you may know it's Black History Month. As such, this is an excellent opportunity to answer the question Who is Major Taylor?. Born Marshall Taylor in 1878 on a farm rural Indiana he earned the nickname 'Major' performing cycling tricks wearing a military uniform. Major Taylor won the world one-mile track cycling championships not once but three times in 1899, 1900, 1901. He also has the honor of being the second black world champion in any sport.

Despite his skill and ability, Major Taylor retired at 32. Sadly, racism played a large role in that decision. Major Taylor's determination and memory live on in the Major Taylor Society, the Major Taylor Association, and Team Major Taylor.

The 'Little 500' is a unique cycling race conducted at the Indianapolis University. Modeled on the Indianapolis 500 it is a 54 year old tradition broadcast on ESPN, ABC's Wide World of Sports and was the inspiration for the 1979 movie, 'Breaking Away'. Lance Armstrong called the Little 500 "the coolest event I ever attended". It is also at this event that Team Major Taylor (TMT) have become a force to be reckoned with.

Perhaps it can be best summed with a quote from Major Taylor himself:

"It is my thought that clean living and a strict observance of the golden rule of true sportsmanship are foundation stones without which a championship structure cannot be built."

Something we should all take to heart.

Long Live Music, Long Live Technology!

Great things are going on in the news today. Steve Jobs, Apple's boss, has decided to side with music fans and consumers by backing initiatives to make mp3s DRM-free. DRM, or Digital Rights Management, with regard to music, is essentially technology used to protect mp3s against sharing. This is music to our ears. Much more music to our ears.

Let's celebrate by sharing a synth-tastic moment with Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Thomas Dolby, and Howard Jones:

I think Iggy Pop says it best, "Look out honey, 'cause [we're] using technology"

Black History Month - Blogs

CJSW is the only radio station in Calgary which will feature afro-centric programming throughout the entire month of February. Keep an eye on the main page for updates regarding special shows and presentations.

All over the blog-o-verse, there are places where you can learn about great jazz, soul, and funk music. Here are a few excellent sites that we think are very informative. Many of them even have free downloads of rare, and generally catchy, tunes:

PHOTOS: Deerhoof and Menomena

It was a big weekend for music in Vancouver. On Friday, Richard's on Richards hosted three bands: Hot Loins, Black Black, and Deerhoof. Admittedly, we were most excited about Deerhoof, but we met some friends (Sean Elbe and Cameron Reed of HL) who share ties with CJSF, another great Canadian radio station.

Stay tuned for details regarding the airing date of the Deerhoof interview. We talked with Greg Saunier, the drummer, for a solid 40 minutes after their soundcheck. How we will break it down into 5-10 radio-friendly minutes is beyond me at the moment.

On Saturday, Pat's Pub presented Portland, OR, phenomena: Menomena. Our apologies for the easy pun. Despite the stifling environment of the poorly ventilated bar, not to mention the venue's sketchy location, the sound-carriers put on a good show.

We're hitting 25 years on the FM dial, and we're having a party to celebrate. Check it out!
