Apparitions in mid-air, multi-headed monsters and rubber boots;
Calgary-based artist, Chris Millar, captivates the human imagination
with punk-rock, pop-culture, comic book inspired visions that merge
paint and sculpture into moments past, present and future
EDMONTON, AB – The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) will launch its early 2012 season with the
opening of CHRIS MILLAR: The Untimely Transmogrification of the Problem, January 28 –
April 29, 2012.
What will happen next? The Untimely Transmogrification of the Problem asks where we go
from here with visual clues of whom and what posed by the author of paintings and sculptures
that are poised to change and alter at any moment, often with grotesque or humorous effect –
that’s transmogrification.
Calgary-based artist, Chris Millar brings nine paintings and two sculptures (including his largest
work to date) to this exhibition, coaxing two-dimensional paintings into three-dimensional, free-
standing structures, challenging our impressions of everyday reality.
This exhibition has been guest-curated for the AGA by Nancy Tousley, the Governor General
award-winning Calgary art critic and curator. Exhibition sponsored by RBC Foundation. Chris
Millar is sponsored by AGA Artist Patrons, Barry Zalmanowitz and June Ross.
