Peggy Baker: Canadian dance icon presents coalesce and armour

January 18th, 2013 @ 8:00 pm
at University Theatre (200 University Court NW Calgary)

The Department of Dance, in the Faculty of Arts, is proud to present Professional Series: coalesce and armour, presented by Peggy Baker Dance Projects on Friday, January 18, and Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre.

Peggy Baker, described as “one of the most outstanding contemporary dancers of her generation”, is an Alberta native who was awarded an Honourary Doctorate from the University of Calgary in 1998. Ms. Baker is the recipient of numerous awards including a Governor General’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts, the Order of Canada, and the Order of Ontario. She toured internationally as a prominent member of Lar Lubovitch’s celebrated New York company throughout the 1980s and joined Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Morris for the inaugural season of their White Oak Dance Project in 1990. This performance marks her third appearance as a guest of the Dance Department since 2000, and also includes a unique two-week residency where she and her company will work with students and members of Calgary’s dance community.

coalesce and armour are companion pieces, inspired by Lewis Thomas’s 1970s classic The Lives of a Cell. Accompanied by an electro-acoustic score by Debashis Sinha, the performance begins with commentary by Ms. Baker, including video footage and still photographs of its source materials, demonstrations of select choreographic elements by the dancers, and a description of the genesis of the dance, from the initial creative impulse through the finished work. Ms. Baker will be joined by her company dancers Larry Hahn, Sean Ling, Sahara Morimoto, and Andrea Nann.

Over the past ten years Ms. Baker has developed educational and archival materials for an initiative entitled The Choreographer’s Trust, a series of DVDs with accompanying booklets that document six dances key to her creative life. University of Calgary second, third and fourth year dance students have been working with The Choreographer’s Trust video guides and written materials to reconstruct the dance Unfold. While in Calgary, Ms. Baker will coach the dancers and devise a unique large ensemble version for presentation during Dance@Night, which runs April 11 – 12, 2013.
