Music Librarian

The Music Librarian at CJSW will help the Music Director with development and implementation of a digital music library. This will include implementing a catalog system for maintenance of the library (eg: CD and record repairs, ordering replacements); helping programmers and volunteers learn how to use the library; recruiting and instructing volunteers on how to maintain and use the CJSW catalogue to allow easy access to information; recruiting volunteers to catalogue library items and keep the library neat and organized; replacing missing library materials by finding album artwork online, asking labels or bands for copies, or burning new copies; and co-ordinating these projects with CJSW’s Music Director, programmers and volunteers.

Ideal for someone with Course Work in:

• Library Studies

Some specialized skills required:

• Strong working knowledge of computers especially Macs

At 9:30am Dave will be interviewing Debra Rasmussen, the president of JazzYYC. JazzYYC is Calgary’s jazz collaborative. There’s strength when we work together. JazzYYC represents, supports and promotes jazz in Calgary year around.

Listen to an interview with internationally-renowned Toronto jazz pianist Bernie Senensky. Both his and Moe Koffman’s music will be featured on the program, with whom he toured along with Dizzy Gillespie all over the world.

Nathan M. Godfrey explores the roots of Jazz music as well as some of the offshoot styles and echoes of Jazz from other countries. Expect hawaiian jazz, cowboy jazz, gypsy jazz, jug band jazz and brazilian jazz, to name a few styles.

60 Years of Jazz on Record

A rebroadcast of 60 Years of Jazz on Record, originally aired back in 1989 by CJSW’s own Philip Barker. The series explores the history of jazz.

These positions are limited to students who were enrolled in school over the past year, are between the ages of 18 and 30, and are returning to school full-time in the fall. The positions are as follows:

Festivals Coordinator

Tasks and Responsibilities

• Liase with summer festivals to coordinate CJSW’s participation as sponsor. CJSW sponsors over 25 festivals each summer including Carifest, Blues Fest, Calgary International Film Festival, Calgary Folk Festival, Greek Festival, Afrikadey!, Sled Island and many more.
• Work with the CJSW Station Manager, Program Director and Office Coordinator to plan and finalize sponsorship contracts with the organizations running festivals in Calgary.
• Ensure the implementation of on air and print advertisements associated with sponsorship agreements.
• Coordinate volunteers to be at festival booths and provide community outreach.
• Coordinate and create CJSW promotional materials such as brochures, program guides, etc. to enhance the festival experience.
• Organize CJSW’s own annual charity street hockey tournament, the Slurpee Cup.
• Work with the CJSW Station Manager, Program Director and Office Coordinator to plan and finalize sponsorship contracts with the organizations running festivals in Calgary.

Required Skills

• Excellent communicator with strong organizational and delegation skills.
• Strong leader, prepared to balance a number of priorities against tight deadlines.
• Open minded and prepared to work with culturally diverse groups, organizations and volunteers.

Multicultural Coordinator

Tasks and Responsibilities

• Meet with multicultural program hosts and volunteers to assess needs.
• Work closely with the CJSW Program Director to further improve and promote the multicultural programs on CJSW.
• Produce promotional material – creating spots to be aired promoting each show, gathering and posting show info to the CJSW website, and, if necessary, developing any appropriate print material.
• Assist in writing and producing advertisements for cultural festivals and events.
• Assist multicultural programmers in developing newsworthy content and arranging interviews and guests.
• Produce stock content for yearly cultural events, such as Black History Month and International Women’s Day.
• Develop outreach initiatives for multicultural communities to increase community involvement.

Required Skills

• Excellent communicator with strong organizational and delegation skills.
• Open minded and prepared to work with culturally diverse groups, organizations and volunteers.
• Ability to organize and coordinate large numbers of volunteers.
• Self-starter and finisher of projects.

Funding Drive and Special Events Coordinator

Tasks and Responsibilities

• Organize and plan CJSW’s annual fundraising campaign, held each year in October.
• Generate ideas for year-round fundraising events and campaigns in addition to the annual Funding Drive.
• Design and implement marketing campaigns to inform the public about the CJSW Funding Drive and the other fundraising events, including finding an artist to create the Funding Drive logo for 2013.
• Establish and monitor budgets, negotiate rates with suppliers and control expenses for the different fundraising initiatives.
• Work with the CJSW Office Coordinator to recruit, train and motivate volunteers for the fundraising events.
• Update and maintain a fundraising database of all CJSW Funding Drive contributors from past Funding Drives.
• Approach local businesses for sponsorship before the start of Funding Drive 2013 and secure donations for volunteer support and pledge incentives.
• Contact current Friends Card businesses and confirm involvement for 2013 and update CJSW’s Friends Card contracts and create an electronic version to make them more accessible to businesses.
• Ensure venues for FD events are available and reserved as well as seek out and confirm performances and activities for FD events.
• Assist in arranging performances and recruiting volunteers for the CJSW Summer Concert Series, New West Fest (in conjunction with the Calgary Stampede) and other special event projects over the summer.

Required Skills

• Very strong organizational skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of MS Office Suite, and experience working in a Mac environment.
• Ability to work with strict deadlines.
• Ability to delegate and coordinate tasks and responsibilities for volunteers.
• Post-secondary education in arts or non-profit studies a strong asset.
• Previous non-profit or fundraising experience an asset, although the position is intended to provide experience in the fundraising field.
• Web experience in design and editing is an asset.

New Media and Spoken Word Programming Coordinator

Tasks and Responsibilities

• Create and manage a web-based system for sharing spoken word programming such as program segments, tips and interview opportunities between spoken word programmers and other CJSW programmers.
• Research and implement new and better ways to connect with our community and better manage internal communication between all CJSW programmers such as utilizing social networking tools.
• Establish, manage and maintain accounts for various social networking programs with a goal of community outreach and promotion of spoken word programs.
• Operate as a member within the news department, regularly communicating with the News Coordinator.
• Maintain CJSW’s news and specialty programming contact database.
• Assign department members to cover spoken word events.
• Cover spoken word events and conduct interviews.

Required Skills

• Deep understanding of social networking tools like Facebook, Twitter and blogging.
• Use and management of software such as “Google Groups” and web blogs to allow programmers to share program segments, tips, and interview opportunities.
• Ability to work closely with the News Director and Program Director to develop new initiatives for creating and publicizing spoken word content.
• Working knowledge of sound production facilities and technology, including Logic Pro is an asset but is not required.
• Familiarity with the local spoken word scene an asset.

Tasks and Responsibilities

• Develop a plan to digitize CJSW’s culturally valuable physical archives of radio interviews, musical performances and historic moments from the past 28 years.
• Digitally archive, catalogue and tag materials for future access and use, and potentially make these materials available to the public based on cultural relevance.
• Coordinate and train volunteers alongside CJSW’s Production Coordinator to help with the actual digitization.
• Create a plan to better archive and catalogue future on-air interviews and musical performances.
• Coordinate special projects such as live recordings and live studio sessions (recording bands and musicians).
• Work with CJSW’s Engineer and News Director to maintain, repair and troubleshoot CJSW’s production facilities and equipment.

Required Skills

• Working knowledge of sound production facilities and technology, including Logic Pro and ProTools, digital recorders, etc.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication and strong leadership.
• Good decision-making abilities to solve problems.

Programming/Promotions Coordinator

Tasks and Responsibilities

• Create and design CJSW promotional materials such as brochures, info packages, pamphlets, program guides, etc.
• Develop a comprehensive marketing plan to reach the University students and community.
• Work with Festivals Coordinator to actively develop CJSW’s participation as a sponsor of the summer festivals including Carifest, Native Awareness Week, Calgary International Film Festival, Calgary Folk Festival, Greek Festival, Afrikadey!, Sled Island and more with CJSW staff and volunteers.

Homeless Women in America

Jennie and Allison interview Susan Scott, an author and advocate for homeless women in Canada, and Cindy, a formerly homeless woman. A few years ago Susan wrote the book All Our Sisters: Stories of Homeless Women in Canada. The book inspired the first national conference on homelessness and women in 2011, and it also inspired a new housing project for low income women in Calgary. Topics discussed in this interview include reasons why women become and stay homeless, specific dangers and issues homeless women face, and the services and tools needed to help keep women off the streets.

This year’s Student’s Union Election will be happening from Tuesday, March 5th until Thursday, March 7th at MacEwan Student Centre, Taylor Family Digital Library, and ICT here at the University of Calgary. Top 10 of 2012 – Peter Noble (Avant Garage host on WSGR, and part-time CJSW music troll)

1. Divine Fits – A Thing Called Divine Fits

Project of Wolf Parade’s Dan Boeckner and Spoon’s Brit Daniel. The album sounds like their former projects, and the collaboration also brings out New Wave sounds, if you like your New Wave the way that, say, the Talking Heads did it.

2. Spiritualized – Sweet Heart Sweet Light

Impeccable musical arrangements and wonderful “I don’t care if you squirm” lyrics that speak of searching and hopelessness. Jason Pierce has taken a sound that should make Oasis jealous.

3. Japandroids – Celebration Rock

This is an album that could have been released in 1987, as part of the “Our Band Could Be Your Life” era. Crunchy guitar hooks, bombastic drum bashing with a lot of crash cymbals, and shouted harmonies, that belong on the same shelf as The Replacements, Husker Du and Sonic Youth.

4. Nova – Midnight Midnight

An album recorded by artists who understand what it’s like to have darkness in the late afternoon. Sparse bleakness done better than The XX, with a powerful delicacy like Cowboy Junkies “Whites Off Earth Now”.

5. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion – Meat And Bone

Imagine taking Sticky Fingers-era Rolling Stones and combining it with the Stooges. Great guitar riffs in a very unsubtle blues-punk album that wallops you between the ears, with just enough noise to prevent it from becoming too accessible.

6. The Dandy Warhols – This Machine

Perhaps an Americana version of Blur, though the song “Be Yourself” sounds like they’re channeling Iggy Pop. Chiming guitars with pop hooks throughout, and appropriate “oh oh oh’s” to help you sing along.

7. Stagnant Pools – Temporary Room

A great, gloomy debut by brothers Bryan and Douglass Enas. Done in a style that pays tribute to Joy Division and The Jesus & Mary Chain, with lots of bass fuzz to fill in the open spaces.

8. Diamond Rugs – Diamond Rugs

Side project of members of Deer Tick, Los Lobos, The Black Lips and Six Finger Satellite. An indie-garage rock delight, complete with flecks of harmonica, and love song lyrics of a type that only “Hungover and Horny” could deliver.

9. The Men – Open Your Heart

This is a rock record. An unapologetic, crank up the guitar solos, standing too close to the other microphone in the garage with the amp next to the beer fridge kind of rock record.

10. Slug Guts – Playin’ In Time With The Deadbeat

A swampy romp reminiscent of fellow countrymen The Birthday Party. Wonderful, cavernous noise at a slow, plodding pace. Lots of layers, lots of distorted percussion and guitars, and an eerie howl to the vocals.

CJSW TOP 10 2012 – Oldies but Goodies, by Peter IRON (aka JAY) Maitland

As the years roll on (and particularly when a hi-energy 2 year old is part of your life) there are occasions when things get missed the first time around. Therefore this list includes Peter IRON (aka JAY) Maitland’s top 10 (re)discoveries.

Children of Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the Second Psychedelic Era – 1976-1995 (Rhino, 2005)  Being a big fan of the first 2 Nuggets box sets it was only a matter of time before I picked up the third edition. June 7, 2012 was my birthday and I had survived an epic night of debauchery at the Staples Centre & beyond with Jett Thunders, Mike and not one but two Dans! The perfect hangover cure was a trip to Ameoba Records (see below) where this stellar 4 disc box set was picked up.

1. Since then I have listened to this 100 song set in its entirety at least 20 times, it is that addictive! While influenced by 60s’ rock and roll, the tracks here stand own their own as being great booty shaking rockin ear wigs. It led me to follow up artists like The Barracudas, The Fleshtones, The Pandoras and The Church’s proper albums.
2. Ty Segall – Twins (Drag City, 2012)  After that Nuggets box set got me all hot and bothered for garage rock, picked up this excellent slab of modern garage rock. Segall was approaching Bob Pollard levels of output in 2012, this being his 3^rd of 3 releases. Come back to Calgary Ty!
3. Forbidden Dimension – The Golden Age Of Lasers (Saved by Radio, 2011)  First things first, Tom Bagley is a Calgary legend! Forbidden Dimension is his band of rock and roll ghouls. This band that formed the same year the Olympics were in town keeps getting better. Golden Age of Lasers features jaw dropping riffs and devious amount of melody. Anyone does not like this record may in fact have an ass made of candy, likely jujubes.
4. Thrush Hermit – The Complete Recordings CD/DVD Box Set (New Scotland, 2010) This box set is a great value, which would mean little if Thrush Hermit was not one of the best indie rock bands ever! The complete records features their 2 EPs, 2 LPs, 2 DVDs and 3 disks of rarities & unreleased material. It is the rarities disks that feature some of my favourite material, particularly early radically different takes on tunes that would later turn up on Joel Plasketts solo records.
5. Joel Plaskett Emergency – Scrappy Happiness (Maple Music, 2012)  Speaking of Plaskett, Scrappy Happiness was his best record since the early 2000s. A great mix of rockers and quieter numbers, Plaskett is becoming Neil Young-esque in his ability to mix these two musical styles. Plus how can you go wrong when it has a song devoted to Husker Du! He put on a couple of great cowtown live shows to boot in 2012.
6. Ameoba Records (Hollywood, California store)  It warmed my heart to see this huge record store [imagine the old A & B Sound (R.I.P.) in downtown Calgary times 5] alive with activity on a random Thursday. Filled to the gills with vinyl, CDs, book and all sorts of other musical toys. I must make a return trip in 2013!
7. Bomp! Saving the World One Record at a Time (published in 2007)  Tied into the garage rock / LA theme, this super fun book follows the birth of two early fanzines (Mojo Navigator and Bomp) and the various other pursuits of its founder Greg Shaw. A garage rock nut that later ran indie record labels (Bomp / Voxx) and also predicted the 70s’ punk rock revolution. This book is twisted multi colored delight that makes a great companion to the Children of Nuggets box set, which is dedicated to Greg Shaw (who passed away shortly before the release of the box set.
8. Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records, the Indie Label That Got Big and Stayed Small (published in 2009)  Another great read that follows is an oral history of the Chapel Hill scene, Superchunk and Merge records from the late 80s’ to present. Our Noise also has chapters on key Merge bands Magnetic Fields, Neutral Milk Hotel, Spoon, Arcade Fire etc. Picked up at Sloth records (as was the Bomp book), a great record store but also remember that it has some books that are well worth checking out!
9. Shelf Life Books (100, 1302 – 4th Street SW) – Speaking of great book stores this gem in the Beltline is always a pleasure to shop in. Shelf Life’s staff is exceedingly helpful, the space is very comfortable and I always walk out with a book that would not find anywhere else in Calgary.
10. Panache Wrap Up BBQ Party @ Sled Island (June 24, 2012) – with so many excellent shows every year at Sled, this one always tops the rest of Sled Islands four plus days of stiff competition. This event features excellent rock and roll put on by Panache Booking plus delicious roast pig. 2012 saw the Blind Shake and Duchess Says blow the roof off the Republik while 2011 may have been even more stacked. It featured Demon Claws, The Thermals, Cheeseburger, Bare Wires and Thee Oh Sees!

Honorable mention … Ted Leo – you know we all have artists that we take for granted. Well until 2012 I took Ted Leo for granted – I had seen him live a couple of times, saw him all over the place at the 2010 Sled Island festival and heard various songs by him. I finally listened to several of his albums all the way through this past year and now I cannot get enough of him. Bring on the follow up to The Brutalist Bricks!

Prior to these interviews, a call for suggested questions was put out to our members, as well as some non-profit organizations located here in Calgary. All of the submitted questions were reviewed, however due to time, only a few were selected.

Thank you to everyone who submitted questions.

The candidates were asked the same questions in the same order and given 10 minutes total to answer them. This meant that the more concise their answers, the more questions that each candidate was able to answer. Two minutes were given at the end of the question period for each candidate to speak freely and directly to our listeners.
