This month features two interviews conducted by CJSW’s Stefan Lewis. First, Stefan speaks with award winning playwright Cheryl Foggo. Cheryl’s play The Devil We Know is an exploration of the life and times of her ancestor John Ware. Also, Stefan speaks on the phone with Rosemary Saidler the President of the Ontario Black History Society about Harriet Tubman. Saidler is the author of Tubman: Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, Her Life in the United States and Canada.

On this special edition of CJSW presents… Stefan Lewis speaks with a 25 + year radio and broadcasting veteran Leo Cripps. Leo is most well known for his contributions to the station through his radio show Caribbean Link Up. Caribbean Link Up was one of Calgary’s first original Caribbean programs that highlighted artists from reggae and roots culture worldwide. Leo has also worked with CBC and Global television, and is a founding member of Calgary’s International Reggae Music Festival. Leo speaks with Stefan about his experiences from his broadcasting career, as well as to talk about being honored as being one of Canada’s most prominent Jamaicans.

CJSW Presents… A World AIDS Day Special

In this special, Stefan Lewis speaks with Sipiwe Mapfumo – the African Communities Project Coordinator for AIDS Calgary Awareness Assocation, along with Rita – a patient who has lived with HIV for a number of years. They discuss the stigma associated with the disease, as well as what is being done within Calgary to help those affected by AIDS/HIV. But first, Kai Sinclair discusses some broader issues that AIDS Calgary focuses on with Andrea Carter – the Team Leader of Prevention and Engagement and Catharine van der Linden. They also discuss the future of research, and interesting developments in the field such as the Berlin Patient. The United Nations’ World AIDS Day is observed each year on December 1st. We will begin the week’s episode with an original radio play produced specifically for the 2012 edition of WordFest by Six Degrees Production and Studios. It is an adaptation of a short story titled “Fortune Telling” by festival author Alix Ohlin and is being broadcast exclusively on CJSW 90.9FM CJSW’s. Next, Kai Sinclair sits down for a discussion with science journalist and author Jay Ingram, about his latest book “Fatal Flaws: How a Misfolded Protein Baffled Scientists and Changed the Way We Look at the Brain.” Also included in this episode is an interview CJSW’s Marc Affeld conducted with Calgary-based journalist and author Andrew Nikiforuk. On today’s show Kat talks to Carey Williamson, the department head of the department of computer science at the University of Calgary, who’ll talk about the importance turing has at the UofC and in computer science as a whole. Nicole Wyatt a professor in the department of philosophy who teaches the philosophy of language and logic as well as a course that covers some of Turing’s results in logic will give us a run down of the Turing Test and speak to some of it’s philosophical implications.

In this episode of CJSW Presents… segments of two taks given as part of Globalfest’s 2012 Human Rights Forum which took place at the Central Branch of the Calgary Public Library back in August. The first talk titled “Myths: Fact or Fiction – Debunking Common Myths of Aboriginal Issues” featured Dr. Marie Delorme, CEO of the Imagination Group of Companies and Christy Morgan, Acting Director for the Calgary Urban Aboriginal Initiative (CUAI). The talk was moderated by former mayor of the city of calgary, Al Duerr.

The second talk is titled “Aboriginal Post Secondary Education – A New Perspective” and featured talks from Dr. Leona Makokis, Retired President of Blue Quills First Nations College and Dr. Noella Steinhauer, Vice President of Education, Indspire.

Aboriginal Activism in Art and Media

But first, Kai speaks with Wab Kinew, a prominent aboriginal activist who is known for his contributions to 8th Fire, a documentary series that explores aboriginal issues – which aired earlier this year on the CBC.
