JAZZ and SPIRITUALITY: A Journey from the early days of jazz to the present day.

When the late Avery “Kid” Howard, trumpet player from New Orleans, sang Lord, Lord, You Sure Been Good to Me; or when he played Just a Closer Walk with Me on his trumpet, he was ably demonstrating the spiritual depths of so much early jazz. But the spiritual underpinnings of the music have persisted ever since. In the 1960s, they were evident in the music of Albert Ayler, as they are today in the playing of saxophonist Charles Gayle.
