MORNING JOY aims to inform and enlighten as it entertains. It’s the broadcast to listen to if you want to learn more about jazz and related musics. Week by week Philip Barker will explore the development of jazz from its origins in the early years of the last century to the present day. He covers big bands and small ones, solo and trio performances by jazz titans, the great jazz vocalists, and the various styles and schools of jazz. He will share with you some of what he has learned from listening to jazz and reading about it over the course of more than 60 years.

Tuesday Features

5th, 12th, 19th and 26th June: Recordings on the Verve and Clef record labels by Count Basie’s 1950s Orchestra. The Basie orchestra recorded for these labels from January 1952 to April 1957. This was a star-studded orchestra playing music from many of the best arrangers of the day.

Thursday Features

On Thursdays MORNING JOY will this month feature jazz from Scotland, much of it played by musicians based in Glasgow, most notably saxophonist Raymond MacDonald.

7 June: Stepping Between The Shadows: Music by Australian pianist, Alister Spence, and Scottish Saxophonist, Raymond MacDonald.

14 June: Delphinius and Lyra: Music by Raymond MacDonald and German Drummer, Günter “Baby” Sommer.

21 June: Some further music from the CD “One Bloke” by the George Burt/Raymond MacDonald Quartet, with guest saxophonist Lol Coxhill. (Some tracks from this CD were featured in our 5th April broadcast.)

28 June: Boohoo Fever, a recording by The George Burt/ Raymond MacDonald Sextet, featuring pianist Keith Tippett. Recorded in Tobermory on the Island of Mull, Scotland, in March 2006. (A Leo Records Release.) (Originally scheduled for broadcast on 31 May, but now re-scheduled.)

The first segment of each broadcast, from 5.30am to the 6 o’clock BBC news is usually devoted to music from CDs recently received at the radio station, plus one classic recording from the early days of jazz.

The period from the end of the BBC news (about 6.06am) until 7.00am is devoted to a specific feature. For May 2012 the following features are planned:

1 May: The 1950s Studio Recordings by the Chet Baker Quartet with Russ Freeman, Part 4.

8 May: The 1950s Studio Recordings by the Chet Baker Quartet with Russ Freeman, Part 5.

15 to 29 May: Recordings by Count Basie’s “New Testament” Orchestra. Formed by Basie in the early 1950s, this orchestra recorded for the Verve and Clef record labels from January 1952 to April 1957. It was a star-studded orchestra playing music from many of the best arrangers of the day.

Thursday Features

3 May: Part Two of an Interview by Philip Barker with Raymond MacDonald, an important figure in the Glasgow Jazz Scene and a member of the Faculty of Glasgow Caledonian University.

10 May: The third and final Section of the above interview.

17 May: BUDDY. The Raymond MacDonald International Big Band, recorded at the Live House Buddy, Tokyo, Japan, August 2008.

24 May: The Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra, with Lol Coxhill and Evan Parker, playing Improcherto (for HB) by George Burt. Recorded at the Gateshead International Jazz Festival in March 2011.

MORNING JOY airs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from

5:30 to 7:00am Mountain Time. There is a six-minute

break for the BBC News at 6:00am.
Its host is Philip Barker. Its aim is to inform
and enlighten as it entertains.

The first half-hour, from 5:30 to 6:00am is usually
devoted to newly released jazz CDs.

During the period from the end of the BBC news to the
end of Morning Joy at 7:00am a particular musician,
group or jazz topic is featured.

Tuesday Features.

March 6, 13, 20 and 27: Live recordings by The Chet Baker Quartet
(With Chet, Russ Freeman, Carson Smith & Bob Neel) from 1954.

Thursday Features.

March 1, 8, and 15: Parts 5, 6, and 7 of Henry Threadgill’s Recordings
for the Black Saint & Soul Note Record labels. The CDs to be featured
are “Spirit of Nuff…Nuff”, “Song Out of My Trees” and “Flutistry”.

March 22: The Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra, with Evan Parker.

March 29: An Exploration of the music on the CD, “Cities”, recorded
in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2005, with Raymond MacDonald, Satoko Fujii, Neil Davidson, Natsuki Tamura and Tom Bancroft.

Morning Joy on CJSW Radio

Monrning Joy is a jazz show that airs from 5:30 to 7:00am in Tuesdays and Thursdays. It aims to inform and enlighten as it entertains. Its host is Philip Barker.

As February is Black History Month, the broadcasts this month will demonstrate Jazz as a unique art form, in which black musicians have had a major role. The following broadcast feature some black musicians with which listeners may or may not be familiar.

Tuesday Broadcasts

7 February: Music by Henry “Red” Allen, brilliant trumpet player, with a sideline as a vocalist.

14 February: Benny Carter, multi-instrumentalist, composer and bandleader.

21 February: sidney Bechet – Soprano Saxophone Genius.

28 February: Illinois Jacquet: An underrated saxophonist.

Thursday Broadcasts

The Thursday broadcasts will include recordings on the Black Saint and Soul Note labels, featuring composer, saxophonist and flautist Henry Threadgill. The following CDs by the group AIR, remastered from original recordings, will be featured:
