Every week this summer, CJSW takes you behind the mic in the booth to spotlight one of our amazing programmers. This week’s spotlight programmer is Adam Mbowe, our summer Archivist and host of Close Encounters from noon to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoons on CJSW 90.9 FM. Adam chatted about funk and changing up grilled cheese. Interview by Melanie Woods.
What program do you host?
My program is called Close Encounters. I focus on funk, soul, disco and like indie R&B, which is a broad term. It’s just, like, soulful music, I’d say.
How do you pick what you play?
It ranges depending on if I pick a theme for the show or not. But generally I’ll just listen to random records that I find, then I’ll look up the artist and find similar artists to that. And then I might like a song more from that other artist. Or it’s music that I’ve already been listening to and then I just sprinkle into the music. Sometimes I do themes like ’80s, jazz funk, afro-funk, like futuristic — things like that. I want to do a ghost theme soon where I tell ghost stories.
What is your favourite thing about CJSW?
My favourite part about CJSW is probably just all of the people you meet, all the beautiful faces that come in every day and you get to learn so much about different folks and you get to learn so much about all different music.
What is your favourite sandwich?
I’m kind of lame. I’m going to say grilled cheese I guess. It’s a classic. You can like change it up — you can add more, you can add less. You can do anything with a grilled cheese.
Tune in to Close Encounters, every Wednesday afternoon from noon to 2:00 p.m.!
