Ashes! \nDATES: \nFebruary 20 – April 10\, 2026 \nLOCATION:  \nAlberta Printmakers Main Space Gallery \n460 42 Avenue SE \nMohkinstsis/Calgary\, AB \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION:  \n“Most prints are contact relics in this sense\, inasmuch as they are essentially stains on one surface that attest to damage done to another surface.” \n– Jennifer L. Roberts\, Contact: Art and the Pull of Print \nSoot on the inside of a fireplace. Drops of candle wax on a dining table. A felt blanket draped over the armrest of a chair. Ashes! Ashes! is an exhibition grounded in the materials of charcoal\, beeswax\, paper and wool combined with printed gestures of cutting\, redrawing\, and wiping away. As I reflect on the 14 houses that I have moved in and out of over the last decade\, I turn to drawing as both an archival and speculative practice. The works exhibited here trace both real memories and imagined scenarios of these homes and the 25 people I shared them with\, manipulating the images through techniques of monotype\, collagraph\, and mokulito to reveal themes of comfort\, deterioration\, and repair. For myself and many of those closest to me\, our paths through the smog of urban housing precarity have been lined with neglectful landlords\, deteriorating architecture\, personal conflicts\, unpaid debts\, and threatening property managers. By sinking its teeth into moments in these spaces and the relationships made and lost in them\, Ashes! Ashes! wonders — with uncertainty\, grief\, and sometimes hope— what is left behind\, what do we take with us\, and where do we go from here? \nABOUT THE ARTIST: \nMargaret Joba-Woodruff is a visual artist whose practice employs an interdisciplinary approach to printmaking to consider the intersections of land\, body\, family\, memory\, and labour. After completing a BFA in Visual Art at the University of British Columbia in 2020\, she became a worker-owner of the Vancouver Artist Labour Union Cooperative before relocating to St John’s\, Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland) to spend a year in residence as the ‘22-’23 Don Wright Scholar at St Michael’s Printshop. In her career\, Vanessa has experience in arts administration\, visitor experience\, and both designing and implementing public programs\, art workshops and elementary school programs. Her curiosity is visible in her own creative practice where she explores different mediums\, subject matters and new techniques. Vanessa’s work often explores themes of memory\, grief\, and identity. When not working\, she can be found embroidering\, painting or exploring nature. \nRiddhi Patel\n(she/her)\nTD Education Facilitator\nRiddhi Patel has training in both visual and performing arts\, holding a Master of Fine Arts (Painting) from the University of Alberta\, a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda\, India\, and a diploma in Kathak Dance. She also works with the Alberta Network of Immigrant Women\, where she manages creative projects\, and has taught undergraduate drawing at the University of Alberta. Her artistic research explores movement through drawing and investigates ways to bring together her dance and drawing practices. Currently\, she is committed to promoting art-making in community settings with people of all ages. In her leisure time\, Riddhi enjoys baking pies and capturing fleeting moments around the city. \nVicky Xingyu Gu\n(she/her)\nTD Education Facilitator\nVicky Xingyu Gu is a Chinese animator who holds a BFA in Animation from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and an MFA in Digital Arts & Animation from the University of Southern California. During her studies\, she explored narrative\, documentary\, and experimental forms of animation. Her works draw inspiration from cultural conflicts\, emotional struggles\, and societal issues\, while experimenting with both digital and traditional media to create layered\, hybrid\, and provocative forms of storytelling. Since relocating to Calgary\, she has become an active participant in the local arts community. She has been teaching various forms of animation with Quickdraw Animation Society and enjoys guiding participants of all ages through creative practices such as drawing\, collage\, mixed media\, and visual storytelling. In her free time\, she enjoys cooking and baking\, watching animated movies\, and playing horror games.

In this 90-minute experience\, families will share movement\, laughter\, and a little creative adventure together while learning a contemporary dance duet created especially for a parent and child — playful in spirit\, yet filled with quiet moments of trust and connection. \nFacilitated by Melissa Monteros and Wojciech Mochniej\, with guest artist Nicole Charlton Goodbrand and her young student\, the workshop gently guides participants through partnering\, shared balance\, and simple lifts. The duet is set to the luminous “Peace Piece” by Bill Evans. \nNo dance experience is necessary. \nPlease note: One parent or guardian per child is required for this workshop. DESCRIPTION:Blackfoot story robes were recorded on hides\, mainly Iini/Bison. Historically the drawings were created using natural inks derived from plants\, rocks\, animal fat\, and other materials. Today Blackfoot artists still use historical materials yet also use contemporary dyes\, paints\, and materials. The stories that were told were often war exploits\, personal accomplishments\, historical events (Winter Counts)\, and symbolic representations. Warriors or artists often painted the robes\, they became our living encyclopedias\, moving around camps\, animating our histories leaving a permanent record. Adrian will speak about his journey as an artist which lead him to being transferred the rights to create these robes\, a continuum of Blackfoot ways of being. \nDescription provided by Adrian Stimson. \nInspired to explore Calgary through new eyes?
