SUMMARY:Béton Armé with guests
DESCRIPTION:Béton Armé with guests \nWhere: Palomino Smokehouse and Social Club\n109 7 Avenue S.W Calgary\nhttp://thepalomino.ca/\n18+ with government issued identification\nWhen: Wednesday May 20\, 2026\nDoors: 7:00pm / Action 8:00pm\nAdmission: $20.00 advance at www.showpass.com\nGeneral On-sale Date: Friday February 6\, 2026 @ 12pm MT\nNO JERK POLICY ALWAYS IN EFFECT!! \nBéton Armé (Montreal)\nMontréal has always had an active music scene\, but it seems hard for bands to break out and reach wider audiences outside Canada. However\, when a band is able to break out\, they become the archetype for their respective sounds\, creating something entirely unique from familiar riffs and structures.Take VOIVOID’s sci-fi thrash and speed metal mutation from the 80s\, INEPSY’s motör-charged wasteland punk ‘n’ roll from the early 2000’s and now…BÉTON ARMÉ’s uplifting blend of Oi!\, punk and hardcore. While it seems most people are learning about the band through their recent tours—hitting cities in Europe\, USA\, Australia and Japan—they have been active since 2018\, meticulously dialing in their sound. \nInitially influenced by the skinhead scenes of France and Italy\, their new LP “Renaissance” borrows from sounds outside the subculture\, orchestrating harmonies to unite the punks\, skins and moshers. The comparison to L’INFANTERIE SAUVAGE is undeniable (they even cover “Les poings levés mais les poings liés”!) with odd song structures switching from slow melodies to fast punchy pogo beats. The Italian influence also still remains\, tapping into bands showcased on the “QUELLI CHE URLANO ANCHORA…” compilation (BASTA\, NABAT\, ROUGH\, etc…). However on this LP\, there is a subtle influence of early American hardcore bands\, adding more stomping rhythms and upping the pace of the songs. \nRenaissance is an excellent example of how a band can evolve their sound without losing the aspects that define them: razor sharps riffs\, unexpected disco drum syncopations and\, of course\, orchestral “Ohhhhhhs”. Every song verges on an anthem that will get stuck in your head for days. \nThis record truly is a “Renaissance”\, hopefully ushering in a new era of scene unity and positivity\, making you believe that together anything is possible. L’Union Fait La Force! – www.lavidaesunmus.com \nhttps://www.betonarmeband.com\nhttps://betonarmeoimtl.bandcamp.com\nhttps://www.instagram.com/betonarme_514 \nIn the spirit of reconciliation\, we acknowledge that we live\, work and play on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika\, Kainai\, Piikani)\, the Tsuut’ina First Nation\, the Iyarhe Nakoda (including Chiniki\, Bearspaw\, and Goodstoney First Nations)\, the Battle River Territory of the Métis Nation of Alberta Districts 5 & 6\, and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta. \nNO JERK POLICY ALWAYS IN EFFECT!!

Since the beginning\, Arkells have never wavered in their mission to be the house band that soundtracks the greatest nights of your life and provides emotional support in your darkest hours. And that communal spirit is reflected in an ever-evolving sound that hits all the perennial pleasure points—fusing the anthemic power of alt-rock\, the pulpit-shaking passion of vintage soul\, the off-the-cuff intimacy of singer-songwriter music\, the urbane edge of 21st-century indie\, and the futurist aesthetics of modern R&B. \nThanks to that eclectic ethos\, Arkells have continued to evolve\, while making everyone feel right at home. As one of the most heavily rotated acts on radio\, and all-time record holders of the JUNO Award for “Group of the Year\,” Arkells have extended their reach beyond borders by infiltrating all corners of pop culture; from global sports telecasts and top-tier video games to the stages of Coachella and Bonnaroo. But the band’s longevity is ultimately a function of their commitment to never coasting on past glories and to always live completely in the moment. Even through their impressive history together\, Arkells still approach every gig as an opportunity to prove themselves to the unconverted; as they’re fond of saying\, each time they take the stage\, “we understand the assignment.” The first rule of rock ‘n’ roll is to play every show like it’s your last—but as Arkells prove night after night\, it’s just as important to hold onto the unbridled energy and enthusiasm of your first. \nhttps://www.arkellsmusic.com\nhttps://www.instagram.com/arkellsmusic \nIn the spirit of reconciliation\, we acknowledge that we live\, work and play on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika\, Kainai\, Piikani)\, the Tsuut’ina First Nation\, the Iyarhe Nakoda (including Chiniki\, Bearspaw\, and Goodstoney First Nations)\, the Battle River Territory of the Métis Nation of Alberta Districts 5 & 6\, and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.\nNO JERK POLICY ALWAYS IN EFFECT!

SUMMARY:Haig Aivazian: You May Own the Lanterns\, but We Have the Light
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit: Haig Aivazian’s You May Own the Lanterns\, but We Have the Light \nContamporary Calgary: #701 11th Street SW\, Calgary\, AB\, T2P 2C4 \nMay 7—August 16\, 2026 \nWho has the power to control light? In what ways can darkness be weaponized? \nYou May Own the Lanterns\, but We Have the Light (2022-ongoing) brings together three episodes of a cartoon mini-series by Haig Aivazian\, building on his ongoing examination of the public administration of light and darkness as a policing tool. \nDrawing on the history of public lighting\, the work considers artificial light not just as a means for illuminating the streets at night\, but as a mechanism of governance\, where visibility underpins surveillance\, authority\, and the staging and enforcement of social order in public space. \nMost civilizations have long understood the night as a realm of mystery. It belongs to creatures we have been trained to fear: gargoyles\, vampires\, and werewolves\, lurking through the shadows. They inhabit the darkness\, only to be banished by daylight – exposed\, vilified\, and cast as dangerous. But the night is also when we dream. Reality loosens its grip and other worlds begin to take shape. In dreams\, regimes can falter\, hierarchies dissolve\, and new orders come into being – if only for a moment\, before the day returns. \nYou May Own the Lanterns\, but We Have the Light is composed of fragments of found cartoons and animations from a wide range of sources\, all meticulously redrawn\, stitched together\, and reanimated in collaboration with a team of animators in Beirut\, with varying degrees of alteration to the original material. In this work\, the night becomes fertile ground for upheaval and resistance\, a space that allows for refuge and revolution\, where efforts to take it over and colonize it are met with acts of subversive escapism and defiance. \nThe exhibition looks at both the street and the nightclub as sites of disruption\, drawing parallels between dancing and protest as forms of communal resistance. But it also traces the moment when these gestures begin to fail – when dance\, gathering\, and dreaming are no longer sufficient to hold the weight of opposition. This moment demands that we consider the necessity of other modes of cultural production\, ones that are capable of fighting – and ultimately undoing – the conditions that allow an oppressive world order to persist. \nHere\, we are faced with a threshold: prevailing systems are about to collapse\, and new ones have yet to take shape. How can we reclaim power in the night?

SUMMARY:National Music Centre Launches PlayLab: a Free Hands-On Music Playground
DESCRIPTION:Interactive community space to transform visitors from observers into active music-makers on May 6th \nThe National Music Centre (NMC) is unveiling PlayLab\, a new interactive environment designed to turn visitors from observers into active music-makers. Opening May 6 on the main floor of Studio Bell\, the space is free and accessible to all. \nPlayLab is a space to explore\, experiment\, and make music together. This interactive exhibit and welcoming community hub offers something for everyone\, with connections to Grade 2 curriculum. It invites children\, families\, and multigenerational audiences to jump in and discover sound in their own way. \nThe experience unfolds across three connected zones. The first section features Strings\, Percussion\, Wind and Electronicinstruments\, allowing visitors to explore different instrument types and make connections to how vibration\, timbre\, and pitch are created through hands-on interaction. The Learn to Play area offers visitors a chance to pick up a ukulele and try it out for themselves\, with the voice of local musician and educator Jason Valleau guiding their beginner or advanced-level journey. Over at the Sound Stage\, everyone can become conductors of their own musical composition. By placing a hand over a tube\, visitors can activate or layer an instrument into an evolving musical score. As multiple participants engage simultaneously\, the composition grows in complexity. Table-top instruments will provide experiences for our youngest visitors\, encouraging them to rattle and bang and make sound at their own level. \n“PlayLab was created in response to visitor demand for more musical experiences for young families – we listened and delivered\,” said Jesse Moffatt\, Senior Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the National Music Centre. “We’ve always wanted visitors to leave feeling like they can make music no matter their ability. PlayLab is about giving people permission to play\, and discover music in a fun\, accessible\, hands-on way. We’ve also made PlayLab part of our free main floor experience\, where anyone can drop in and get a taste of what National Music Centre is all about at no charge.” \nBeyond its role as an immersive exhibit\, PlayLab will serve as a flexible\, year-round community hub for a wide range of daytime programs and activities\, from workshops and instrument-building sessions to artist talks and informal music play days. Starting in the summer\, PlayLab will spill onto the streets outside at night through projections\, offering an animated expression of sound\, movement\, and creativity that reinforces Studio Bell’s presence as a living\, active space within the city. \nPlayLab is a food and beverage-friendly space on the main floor of Studio Bell. It is free and open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. \nPlayLab is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Alberta Museums Association and the Radomski Foundation. \nAbout National Music Centre | Centre National de Musique\nNational Music Centre (NMC) is a registered charity dedicated to amplifying the love\, sharing\, and understanding of music.
