SUMMARY:National Music Centre Launches PlayLab: a Free Hands-On Music Playground
DESCRIPTION:Interactive community space to transform visitors from observers into active music-makers on May 6th \nThe National Music Centre (NMC) is unveiling PlayLab\, a new interactive environment designed to turn visitors from observers into active music-makers. Opening May 6 on the main floor of Studio Bell\, the space is free and accessible to all. \nPlayLab is a space to explore\, experiment\, and make music together. This interactive exhibit and welcoming community hub offers something for everyone\, with connections to Grade 2 curriculum. It invites children\, families\, and multigenerational audiences to jump in and discover sound in their own way. \nThe experience unfolds across three connected zones. The first section features Strings\, Percussion\, Wind and Electronicinstruments\, allowing visitors to explore different instrument types and make connections to how vibration\, timbre\, and pitch are created through hands-on interaction. The Learn to Play area offers visitors a chance to pick up a ukulele and try it out for themselves\, with the voice of local musician and educator Jason Valleau guiding their beginner or advanced-level journey. Over at the Sound Stage\, everyone can become conductors of their own musical composition. By placing a hand over a tube\, visitors can activate or layer an instrument into an evolving musical score. As multiple participants engage simultaneously\, the composition grows in complexity. Table-top instruments will provide experiences for our youngest visitors\, encouraging them to rattle and bang and make sound at their own level. \n“PlayLab was created in response to visitor demand for more musical experiences for young families – we listened and delivered\,” said Jesse Moffatt\, Senior Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the National Music Centre. “We’ve always wanted visitors to leave feeling like they can make music no matter their ability. PlayLab is about giving people permission to play\, and discover music in a fun\, accessible\, hands-on way. We’ve also made PlayLab part of our free main floor experience\, where anyone can drop in and get a taste of what National Music Centre is all about at no charge.” \nBeyond its role as an immersive exhibit\, PlayLab will serve as a flexible\, year-round community hub for a wide range of daytime programs and activities\, from workshops and instrument-building sessions to artist talks and informal music play days. Starting in the summer\, PlayLab will spill onto the streets outside at night through projections\, offering an animated expression of sound\, movement\, and creativity that reinforces Studio Bell’s presence as a living\, active space within the city. \nPlayLab is a food and beverage-friendly space on the main floor of Studio Bell. It is free and open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. \nPlayLab is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Alberta Museums Association and the Radomski Foundation. \nAbout National Music Centre | Centre National de Musique\nNational Music Centre (NMC) is a registered charity dedicated to amplifying the love\, sharing\, and understanding of music. More than a museum\, NMC focuses on five key areas: Exhibitions and Collections\, Artist and Professional Development\, Performance and Recording\, Education and Learning\, and Music and Wellness. From its headquarters at Studio Bell in the heart of Calgary’s East Village neighbourhood and satellite location in Montreal\, NMC celebrates Canada’s rich musical legacy\, honouring legendary artists\, nurturing new voices\, and bringing people together through music. NMC also houses a vast collection of rare instruments\, artifacts and memorabilia\, world-class recording studios\, and four national music halls of fame\, including the Canadian Music Hall of Fame\, the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame\, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame\, and Quebec’s Adisq Hall of Fame. National Music Centre marks its 10th anniversary as Canada’s home for music in 2026\, with a year-long lineup of exhibits\, events\, and programs planned. SUMMARY:Béton Armé with guests
DESCRIPTION:Béton Armé with guests \nWhere: Palomino Smokehouse and Social Club\n109 7 Avenue S.W Calgary\nhttp://thepalomino.ca/\n18+ with government issued identification\nWhen: Wednesday May 20\, 2026\nDoors: 7:00pm / Action 8:00pm\nAdmission: $20.00 advance at www.showpass.com\nGeneral On-sale Date: Friday February 6\, 2026 @ 12pm MT\nNO JERK POLICY ALWAYS IN EFFECT!! \nBéton Armé (Montreal)\nMontréal has always had an active music scene\, but it seems hard for bands to break out and reach wider audiences outside Canada. However\, when a band is able to break out\, they become the archetype for their respective sounds\, creating something entirely unique from familiar riffs and structures.Take VOIVOID’s sci-fi thrash and speed metal mutation from the 80s\, INEPSY’s motör-charged wasteland punk ‘n’ roll from the early 2000’s and now…BÉTON ARMÉ’s uplifting blend of Oi!\, punk and hardcore. While it seems most people are learning about the band through their recent tours—hitting cities in Europe\, USA\, Australia and Japan—they have been active since 2018\, meticulously dialing in their sound. \nInitially influenced by the skinhead scenes of France and Italy\, their new LP “Renaissance” borrows from sounds outside the subculture\, orchestrating harmonies to unite the punks\, skins and moshers. The comparison to L’INFANTERIE SAUVAGE is undeniable (they even cover “Les poings levés mais les poings liés”!) with odd song structures switching from slow melodies to fast punchy pogo beats. The Italian influence also still remains\, tapping into bands showcased on the “QUELLI CHE URLANO ANCHORA…” compilation (BASTA\, NABAT\, ROUGH\, etc…). However on this LP\, there is a subtle influence of early American hardcore bands\, adding more stomping rhythms and upping the pace of the songs. \nRenaissance is an excellent example of how a band can evolve their sound without losing the aspects that define them: razor sharps riffs\, unexpected disco drum syncopations and\, of course\, orchestral “Ohhhhhhs”. Every song verges on an anthem that will get stuck in your head for days. \nThis record truly is a “Renaissance”\, hopefully ushering in a new era of scene unity and positivity\, making you believe that together anything is possible. L’Union Fait La Force! – www.lavidaesunmus.com \nhttps://www.betonarmeband.com\nhttps://betonarmeoimtl.bandcamp.com\nhttps://www.instagram.com/betonarme_514 \nIn the spirit of reconciliation\, we acknowledge that we live\, work and play on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika\, Kainai\, Piikani)\, the Tsuut’ina First Nation\, the Iyarhe Nakoda (including Chiniki\, Bearspaw\, and Goodstoney First Nations)\, the Battle River Territory of the Métis Nation of Alberta Districts 5 & 6\, and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta. \nNO JERK POLICY ALWAYS IN EFFECT!!

SUMMARY:Bob Log III with Bug Swallow\, Bog Bodies and guest selector Alley-oop
DESCRIPTION:Bob Log III with Bug Swallow\, Bog Bodies and guest selector Alley-oop \nWhere: Palomino Smokehouse and Social Club\n109 7 Avenue S.W Calgary\nhttp://thepalomino.ca/\n18+ with government issued identification\nWhen: Wednesday June 10\, 2026\nDoors: 7:00pm / Action 8:00pm\nAdmission: $20.00 advance at www.showpass.com\nNO JERK POLICY ALWAYS IN EFFECT!! \nBob Log III\nSo when you see a man in a jumpsuit and full-face helmet rigged up with a telephone receiver come barreling down the honky-tonk stairs in a lifeboat while beating away on a hollow-body guitar\, don’t get out of the way. Jump right in there with him. And as long as you live\, you’ll never forget what he taught you. – Taipei Times \nA man in a human cannonball suit soon appeared from a side door\, his head completely obscured by a tinted black helmet\, its front welded into a telephone which seemed to wirelessly amplify his voice to the audience. Bob Log III launched into a mind-blowing set\, finger-picking his beaten-up black guitar for a sound of steel string blues and heavy rock n’ roll. The sound was reminiscent of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion if it had to be categorised\, but his music would be better described as Jerry Lee Lewis crossed with a little of Tom Waits’ heavy industrial sounds. – yorkpress.co.uk \nHis guitar growls like a rabies-infested mutt\, straight from the backyard of an Alabama whorehouse. The expletives he squawks are absolutely unintelligible\, at least while the groan of his six stringed demon viciously dominates the aural realm. When the blanket of perfectly distorted guitar ends\, which always coincides with a great victory stance\, Mr. Log displays his propensity for what is only describable as ‘not giving a fuck’\, which in his case takes the form of the perfect stage presence. – beatsperminute.com \nBoobs were dipped in scotch\, one fan took an accidental swan dive into the music equipment and Bob Log III managed to play slide guitar\, drums and sing while balancing three women on his lap. – heyreverb.com \nShould you never have had the joy of seeing Bob Log III play\, let me attempt to describe it for you: picture a man in a shiny blue jumpsuit and a pilot’s helmet wired to a telephone receiver\, playing slide guitar with all the dirty\, scuzzy joy in his heart. Add to that a kick drum and foot cymbal\, the myth of a monkey paw in place of a right hand\, and a setlist that includes songs named Boob Scotch\, Bubble Strut and My Shit Is Perfect\, and you’ll begin to get the gist. It is loud and strange and electrifying\, and how ecstatic it all sounds\, that guitar glazed with a kind of sublime and honey-dipped happiness. – theguardian.com \nOne would have to be in a pretty foul mood not to be entertained by the mysterious awesomeness of Bob Log III. Sure\, his musical skills are something to behold\, his one-man-band brand of blues/Americana displaying dexterity\, creativity\, and plenty of good old rock ‘n’ roll\, but then there’s his wacky persona. At Monday’s packed Union Hall gig\, Mr. Log leapt from behind the curtain that functions as the stage door in his signature getup: a full suit with bits of gold teasing at the bottom\, and a dark-glassed racing helmet with a phone receiver wired as a mic. After a quick intro jam he shed the formality to reveal his shimmering gold full body suit\, the very rocket man the audience had been waiting for\, and burst into “Goddam Sounds Good” off the recently released My Shit Is Perfect. – theowlmag.com \nhttps://www.boblog111.com\nhttps://boblogiii.bandcamp.com\nhttps://www.instagram.com/boblog111 \nBug Swallow\nBanjo Egg Punk\nhttps://bugswallow.bandcamp.com\nhttps://www.instagram.com/bugswallow \nBog Bodies\ntwitchy scuzz-punk\nhttps://bogofbodies.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:Anvil Pounding the Past 2026 tour with Midnight Hellion and LOVER
DESCRIPTION:Anvil Pounding the Past 2026 ‘Metal On Metal’ ‘Hard N’ Heavy’ ‘Forged In Fire’ with Midnight Hellion and LOVER \nWhere: Palomino Smokehouse and Social Club\n109 7 Avenue S.W Calgary\nhttp://thepalomino.ca/\n18+ with government issued identification\nWhen: Wednesday July 1\, 2026\nDoors: 7:00pm / Action 8:00pm\nAdmission: $22.00 advance at www.showpass.com\nNO JERK POLICY ALWAYS IN EFFECT!! \nAnvil (Toronto)\nFormed in Toronto in 1978 by childhood friends Steve “Lips” Kudlow (vocals/guitar) and Robb Reiner (drums). They had been playing music together since their teens. Initially known as Lips\, the band added bassist Ian Dickson and rhythm guitarist Dave Allison\, and in 1980 recorded an independent album titled Hard ‘n’ Heavy\, which introduced their penchant for sexual explicitness. Zany antics notwithstanding\, Anvil’s musical contributions were very real; their fastest songs were some of the earliest speed metal laid to wax\, while jazz-trained drummer Robb Reiner set new technical standards for the genre\, including pioneering the double bass drum technique that’s become a staple of much extreme metal since. \nAnvil were one of the first North American bands to push the sound and style of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal one step further. Indebted to the likes of Judas Priest\, Iron Maiden\, and many others from across the Atlantic\, Anvil nonetheless played louder\, faster\, and heavier than their heroes\, in the process laying the groundwork for the thrash movement that took over heavy metal’s underground in the ’80s. Anvil’s second and third albums\, Metal on Metal and Forged in Fire\, made significant waves in the metal community in 1982 and 1983. – www.allmusic.com \nhttps://www.instagram.com/lipsanvil\nhttps://www.instagram.com/anvil.metal \nMidnight Hellion (Trenton\, New Jersey)\nTheir distinctive style – classic\, no-frills heavy metal serving tremendously infectious spurts of thrash riffs with a straight\, fun stage attitude – made them a top pick for world-class acts to ignite their respective crowds. Bringing their strong regional fan base to the table\, MIDNITE HELLION shared the stages with OverKill\, Dirkschneider\, Grim Reaper\, Flotsam & Jetsam\, Obituary\, Diamond Head\, Raven\, Exodus\, Yngwie Malmsteen\, and many more. \nhttps://www.midnitehellion.com\nhttps://www.instagram.com/midnitehellion \nLOVER\nOld school guitar riffs\, 80s heavy metal soul \nhttps://loverrockofficial.bandcamp.com\nhttps://www.instagram.com/loverrockofficial

SUMMARY:Canada's IRON KINGDOM Forge "Blood and Steel" w/ Second Single From New Album "Shadows and Dust" Release Tour
DESCRIPTION:Calgary Show takes place at 7 p.m. on August 22nd at Dickens Pub. More information to be released for the upcoming show later on Dickens Pub Website: https://dickensyyc.com/events/ \nABOUT THE BAND:  \nVancouver\, Canada’s traditional heavy metal torchbearers IRON KINGDOM return with the second single from their upcoming sixth studio album “Shadows and Dust\,” due out June 6\, 2026\, marking their first release under their new label partnership with Steel Shark Records (France)\, which will offer an exclusive EU edition limited to just 300 double‑CD copies. Disc 1 will contain the full “Shadows and Dust” album\, while Disc 2 will feature a “Best Of” collection highlighting tracks from Iron Kingdom’s previous five releases. In addition\, the label will introduce a third vinyl colour (100 copies) available only to EU fans.\n\nFollowing the momentum of their first single and music video “Defenders”\, the band now unveils the powerful new track “Blood and Steel”\, accompanied by an epic lyric video that dives deep into the album’s themes of endurance\, mortality\, and the human cost of ambition. \nBassist Leighton Holmes explains further: \n“The inspiration for ‘Blood and Steel’ came from two places. One draws from Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen\, and the other from imagining myself as a soldier in Alexander the Great’s army\, twelve years into a campaign\, thousands of miles from home\, questioning how I got there. The endless marching\, the battles\, the weight of the gear… It’s a brutal life\, and in a small way\, it parallels the blood\, sweat\, and tears of touring in a band.”\n\nMusically\, “Blood and Steel” stands apart in the IRON KINGDOM catalogue. \n“We wanted the song to feel like a march. It’s very bass‑ and drum‑driven in the verses\, with guitars layered in strategic spots. It’s a different kind of song for us\, and I think it’s going to add something special to our live sets\,” adds vocalist/guitarist Chris Osterman. \nWatch and listen to “Blood and Steel” at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qb8BIzHT3_Q \nAdd to your Spotify playlist – https://open.spotify.com/track/6SDL7czZLBENHKRRbFvrQl\n\n“Shadows and Dust” is IRON KINGDOM’s most emotionally charged and thematically dark album to date\, ten tracks exploring death\, hardship\, impermanence\, and the resilience required to push through life’s most difficult trials. The cover art\, inspired by the story behind “Blood and Steel\,” depicts an army marching across a desolate landscape\, echoing the album’s central themes of struggle and perseverance.\n\n“This album plays in a dark realm. But that’s exactly what will make it accessible to people going through tough times. The music shows hope for a way out. It’s a journey\, one we can’t wait for fans to experience front to back\,” says Osterman.

SUMMARY:Neon Taste presents Unsane ‘Occupational Hazard’ Tour with PURE LOVE ETERNAL PEACE and Bat Leather
DESCRIPTION:Neon Taste presents Unsane ‘Occupational Hazard’ Tour with special guests PURE LOVE ETERNAL PEACE and Bat Leather \nWhere: Palomino Smokehouse and Social Club\n109 7 Avenue S.W Calgary\nhttp://thepalomino.ca/\n18+ with government issued identification\nWhen: Wednesday September 22\, 2026 Doors: 7:00pm\nGeneral sale / Friday March 13\, 2026\, 10:00 a.m. MST \nUnsane\nSonically\, the record is noted for its aggressively distorted guitars\, driving basslines\, and pounding drums – hallmarks of the band’s uncompromising noise rock style. In preparation for the album\, the band first recorded a six-song demo session at AmRep Studios in Minneapolis\, MN. Shortly after\, Unsane relocated to Excello Studios in Brooklyn\, NY\, where they tracked the album with engineer Billy Anderson. Frontman Chris Spencer (guitar\, vocals) recalls the period: “The writing process for Occupational\nHazard was great. I think the one real defining factor to this very creatively rewarding period of time in our career was that we knew what we were doing in terms of songwriting\, and we were able to take our time while constantly playing.” \nFollowing the recording sessions\, Occupational Hazard was mixed by legendary producer and Barkmarket guitarist David Sardy. Reflecting on the collaboration\, Spencer adds: “I’ve always liked what he did with his own band and in the studio\, and I thought that it would work well for what we were doing. Dave also had access to a really good studio in Midtown Manhattan\, so we decided to take advantage of his great production work and that space. We had been offered a three-record deal with Relapse Records and figured that would be the best thing to do\, considering we wanted to tour constantly.” \nShortly before the album’s original release\, during a European press tour\, Spencer was brutally attacked by street thugs in Vienna\, Austria\, and left for dead. He returned to touring after emergency surgery\, though the incident significantly disrupted the album’s original touring cycle. Now\, more than two decades later\, the entire album has been newly remastered by longtime Unsane collaborator and engineer Andrew Schneider. All formats will include an extra track\, “No Soul\,” originally released via Frank Kozik’s now-defunct\, infamous Man’s Ruin label as a vinyl-only limited edition. Additionally\, the band will release the original six-song demo session recorded at AmRep Studios in Minneapolis\, MN. This previously unreleased material will be included in the digital download format and will also be made available for streaming and download. \nDespite its cult status\, the band had never performed Occupational Hazard in its entirety – until a newly announced\, one-time-only special performance at the Roadburn Festival in April 2026. In addition to this exclusive appearance\, Unsane will embark on a full EU/UK headline tour\, running from March 13 to April 19\, 2026. \nhttps://unsane.bandcamp.com\nhttps://www.instagram.com/unsaneband \nPURE LOVE ETERNAL PEACE\nExperimental Psych Drone Doom https://pureloveeternalpeace.bandcamp.com\nhttps://www.instagram.com/pureloveeternalpeace \nBat Leather\nNoise Post Rock\nhttps://sonicchurchrecords.bandcamp.com/album/pageantry \nNeon Taste\nhttps://www.neontasterecords.ca\nhttps://neontasterecords.bandcamp.com\nhttps://www.instagram.com/neon.taste.records
