SUMMARY:A Tribute to Horace Silver
DESCRIPTION:The Jazz Nebula society presents A Tribute to Horace Silver\, Saturday\, March 14\, 2026\, 2:00 p.m. at Scarboro United Church\, 134 Scarboro Ave SW\, featuring: Johnny Summers\, trumpet; John Reid\, saxophones and flute; Jon Day\, grand piano; John Gray\, string bass; Ed Batley\, drums. Tickets are $40 general admission\, $35 for Jazz Nebula and CALL members\, $10 students\, and are available at Eventbrite.ca. \nThere will be a pre-show chat presentation on Horace Silver at 1:30 p.m. given by Jazz Nebula Artistic and General Director\, John Reid. \nHorace Ward Martin Tavares Silver (September 2\, 1928 – June 18\, 2014) was an American jazz pianist\, composer\, and arranger\, particularly in the Hard Bop style that he helped pioneer in the 1950s. \nSilver got his break on when his trio was recruited by Stan Getz in 1950. Silver soon moved to New York City\, where he developed a reputation as a composer and for his bluesy playing. It was his work with the Jazz Messengers\, co-led by Art Blakey\, that brought both his writing and playing most attention. \nAfter leaving Blakey in 1956\, Silver formed his own quintet\, with what became the standard small group line-up of tenor saxophone\, trumpet\, piano\, bass\, and drums. Their public performances and frequent recordings for Blue Note Records increased Silver’s popularity\, even through changes of personnel. His most successful album was Song for My Father\, made with two iterations of the quintet in 1963 and 1964. \nSilver was among the most influential jazz musicians of his lifetime. Grove Music Online describes his legacy as at least fourfold: \n\nAs a pioneer of hard bop;\nAs a user of what became the archetypal quintet instrumentation of tenor saxophone\, trumpet\, piano\, bass\, and drums;\nAs a developer of young musicians who went on to become important players and bandleaders;\nFor his skill as a composer and arranger.\n\nHis compositions are one of his great legacies and those are what will be celebrated in this concert: 14 of Silver’s songs will be performed including: “Doodlin’\,” “Song for My Father\,” “The Preacher\,” “Nica’s Dream\,” “The Hardbop Grandpop\,” and “Sister Sadie” among others. \nAn aspect of Canadian music will be included as well. \nHis innovative incorporation of gospel and blues sounds into jazz compositions took place while they were also being added to rock ‘n’ roll and R&B pieces. His compositions and arrangements were also designed to make Silver’s typical line-up sound larger than a quintet. \nFor more information contact: https://www.jazzyyc.com/jazz-events/jazz-nebula-2025/

SUMMARY:GENUS 394WZ
DESCRIPTION:Genus 394Wz is a visually striking\, poetic sci-fi performance blending puppetry and film. \nGuided by a mysterious narrator who exists outside of time\, the work travels from the primordial past to a distant future\, tracing humanity’s evolving relationship with an imagined Genus — by turns food source\, curiosity\, spectacle\, and ultimately asking how power\, empathy\, and ethical responsibility shape humanity’s treatment of “others”. \nAbstract\, symbolic\, and emotionally resonant\, this twelve-act journey invites audiences to reflect on power\, exploitation\, interdependence\, and our ethical relationship with the non-human world. Exploring themes of dominion\, exploitation\, worship\, curiosity\, technological escalation\, and moral ambiguity. In the final act\, as the species awakens to its own freedom\, it’s left with a haunting question: after being everything from food to idol to genetic substrate\, what identity remains? \nDate: one show only – March 12th\, 2026\nTime: 7:00pm\, doors open at 6:30pm\nVenue: The Confluence Historical Site – Burnswest Theatre\nTickets: $20 per person\, with $5/$10/$15 Pay What You Can options

SUMMARY:Jully Black and Raquel Ra Brown
DESCRIPTION:Renaissance Juno and Gemini Award-winning soulful R&B singer/songwriter Jully Black has re-invented herself many times over her storied\, multi-faceted life. Childhood church choir singing and college law enforcement training preceded a 1998 music publishing deal at age 20. As she penned songs for other artists\, including Kardinal Offishall\, Nas\, Destiny’s Child and Choclair\, she developed her own powerhouse\, multi-octave vocal style. After her first Juno-nominated hit song “Rally’n” didn’t result in record label courting\, she returned to work as a bank teller. Black’s songwriting chops weren’t ignored\, though\, with her songs landing on films\, followed by her firecracker record\, 2007’s Revival\, which strongly impacted Canadian urban music – especially her take on Etta James’s “Seven Day Fool.” \nWednesday\, March 11th \nDoors at 7:00PM\, show at 8:00PM \nTickets $36.60 \nAll ages! \n
