SUMMARY:Alter Ego Theatre Presents “The Jay’s Wing”
DESCRIPTION:Alter Ego Theatre presents the production of The Jay’s Wing based on Ivan Franko’s novella. The show will be in Ukrainian with English subtitles. \nAbout the Show \nAt the heart of the story are Maria and Khoma (Massino). Maria is emotionally rich\, vibrant\, impulsive\, and drawn to intense experiences and vivid personalities. Romantic by nature\, she seeks to understand the world – and gradually comes into contact with its harsher realities. Khoma\, by contrast\, is restrained and rational\, oriented toward order\, predictability\, and self-control. He avoids emotional excess and strives for stability and balance. They are drawn to one another\, yet their different understandings of love\, freedom\, and responsibility turn this connection into a test – where every choice carries a cost. \nShow Info \nDoors open at 5:30pm on March 29. The show will run from 6pm to 8pm \nTicket Info \nStudents & Seniors: $21 \nRegular: $25 \nCabaret table seats Premium: $60 \nTickets can be purchased at: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/the-jays-wing-tickets-1982854256458

SUMMARY:Analogue Revolution: How Feminist Media Changed the World
DESCRIPTION:A League of Their Own Presents: Analogue Revolution: How Feminist Media Changed the World (2023) \n \n“Before there was #MeToo\, there was Toronto’s Diva: A Quarterly Journal of South Asian Women\, Montreal’s Groupe Intervention Vidéo and Dykes on Mykes Radio Show\, and the women-led Studio D of the National Film Board of Canada. \n \nThe list extends into the hundreds. All Canadian\, all feminist\, and all trailblazing media of the late 60s to mid-90s.”\n \n-Image et Nation Film Festival Catalogue\n \nThis feature-length documentary traces the rise and fall of analogue feminist communications that preceded the MeToo era. From Halifax to Vancouver\, feminist storytellers of the 1970s to 1990s took hold of cutting-edge media technology to document everything from racism in the women’s movement\, to how to insert a diaphragm. \n \nThe film includes rare archival footage\, like African American feminist poet Audre Lorde’s speech at the Third International Feminist Book Fair (Montreal 1988) and pro-choice demonstrations in the 1980’s\, leading to the film’s\nclimax: draconian cutbacks to women’s and lesbian organizations across Canada\, following the massacre of women at École Polytechnique in Montreal\, 1989. Cutbacks\, racism\, and moral panics then decimated an intricate\, sophisticated\, and world-changing feminist media movement. \n \nThe film concludes with a resurgence and a сall to action: young BIPOC feminists using analogue strategies to create new feminist digital networks.\n \nGenre: Documentary\n \nDirector: Marusya Bociurkiw\nStars: Linda Abrahams\, Leela Acharya\, Zanana Akande    \nRunning time: 1 hr 34 min \nRating: 14A (Nudity)  \n \n*Featuring a Q&A with the director Marusya Bociurkiw in attendance!*\n \n~ READ BEFORE ARRIVING – –  – Debit\, credit\, and tap only for payment. SUMMARY:Mapping History: The Calgary Atlas Project
DESCRIPTION:Navigate the past and present of Calgary at Lougheed House in collaboration with Calgary Institute for the Humanities! This Spring\, Mapping History: The Calgary Atlas Project brings the CIH Atlas Projects maps to life. \nEach map is literally a work of art\, carefully crafted by local Calgarians like queer history expert\, Kevin Allen\, folk artist Karen Mills\, and literary historian Shaun Hunter. From Adrian Stimson’s Bison Robe that maps the First Nations Stampede to Cheryl Foggo and Simone Elizabeth Saunders’ tapestry that weaves Making Place: A Map of Black Calgary\, you’ll explore the art behind the paper here at the House from April 2nd until May 17th. \nAs if that weren’t enough\, the artists themselves will be leading a series of tours\, workshops\, speaker series\, and more to take you down to the basemap of the city you know and love. We guarantee you’ll re-emerge with a totally new view of Calgary\, the people who give it so many living layers\, and the many means of mapmaking. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Perspective Film Series: The Zone of Interest (2023)\, dir. Jonathan Glazer
DESCRIPTION:Perspective Film Series:\nThe Zone of Interest (2023)\, dir. Jonathan Glazer\nApril 12\n5:30 PM | Dome Theatre\nThe commandant of Auschwitz and his wife strive to build a dream life for their family in a house next to the camp. Off-screen sounds – gunshots\, screams\, industrial machinery – constantly intrude onto their lives\, creating a disturbing contrast between normality and mass murder. By withholding graphic imagery\, the film examines how extreme violence can coexist with ordinary life through denial\, compartmentalization\, and moral indifference. By coolly observing the everyday lives of those complicit in unimaginable crimes\, The Zone of Interest confronts us with the chilling normality that underpins an unforgivable brutality. \nCountry: UK\, Poland\, US\n105 minutes\, in German\, Polish\, and Yiddish with English subtitles \nDisclaimer: This film contains some difficult subject matter\, including racism and strong references to violence\, including sounds\, which may be triggering for some viewers. \nFREE for members. Non-members: $10—your ticket to this screening includes admission to Contemporary Calgary. Our galleries are open from 12-5 PM for viewing prior to attending the program.
