For this month’s episode I visit the home of Calgary’s Poet Laureate, Derek Beaulieu, who takes me on a tour of the highlights from his personal library. If you’d like to find out more about Derek and what he’s up to, be sure to visit his website.
Nick Thran discusses his writing process as well as his love of taking walks. Nick Thran is currently the Writer-in-Residence for the Calgary Distinguished Writers Program. He will be performing at the Poetry Cabaret this October for Word Fest and is also available for FREE manuscript consultations which you can book online.
The feature interview for this episode is with Bradley Somer, a local author who has just released his second novel, Fishbowl. The full, uncut interview with Bradley Somer will be released soon, so keep your eyes peeled!
In October we’ll be in the midst of the CJSW Funding Drive, so I will be doing a special, live, half-hour version of Writer’s Block where you will have the chance to pledge the show for wonderful incentives! I will post about that soon, once I have all the details settled, as well as the release date for our next full episode (there may be a bonus episode in November!).

As Writer’s Block has made the transition to an hour-long format, I’m excited to bring you new segments exploring the world of books and writers outside of the traditional interviews that have generally been on the show. One of these new segments is tours of book collections, and so the episode kicks off with a tour of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Vault at the University of Calgary with Annie Murray, the Associate University Librarian for Archives and Special Collections. Annie is the curator of rare books and manuscripts and she takes me deep into the vault, a special climate-controlled room that the general public don’t get to see. Inside is a treasure trove for book lovers and we visit some of the highlights of the collection.
University of Calgary PhD student Rod Moody-Corbett reads one of a collection of stories he has written in one sentence. Rod received acclaim for his unique approach to short fiction when another one-sentence story of his, Parse, was shortlisted for the CBC Short Story Prize, and was voted as the public’s favourite of the competition.
Our feature interview for this episode is with award-winning author Marina Endicott. During my chat with her, Marina talks about a fascinating part of her process, her writing wall. Have a look at this picture of her writing wall to see some of the images that inspired her recent novel, Close to Hugh .
The next episode of Writer’s Block airs September 28th at 11am and 8pm. Tune in for a tour of Calgary Poet Laureate Derek Beaulieu’s personal library complete with guest appearances by his dog and cat. The show will also feature an interview with Calgary author Bradley Somer on his new novel Fishbowl and segments featuring other literary tidbits. Be sure to listen in and subscribe to the podcast of the show on iTunes!
