Acheulean Age – Episode July 19, 2025

Whelp, coyotes are still in the neighbourhood looking to snack on my wee dog, so I've taken to carrying a big bell with me when I take him for walks - a handmade, tempered bell from northern India, made by local shepherds who use the bells to keep track of their sheep; each bell is a unique tone due to its nature of being handmade and hammered. Truly experienced sheepherders can even tell which sheep is nearby or in distress from that unique sound of the ringing bell! So far, it's been pretty good at telling the coyotes to back off. I do feel a bit like a mad monk or druid on the loose, walking through the storms we've been having lately, ringing my bell and walking my dog. The secret to living a storybook life is to romanticize everything, especially such magical experiences and unusual visuals as trilling out a bell in the rain. And here's the perfect soundtrack for doing just that (without bells, you'll have to bring your own to ring along)!
