It’s the end of June! And you know what that means in Calgary! It’s means it’s time to go Sledding!!! I’m talking about the beloved music festival, Sled Island. They’ve got an amazing lineup last year, and I’ve been using it as an opportunity to showcase some Albertan talent. Today, we’re keeping it Calgary and showcasing the new band “Ginger Beef”!! They really made waves here at the station last year when the album dropped, it hit number ONE on the CJSW Chartlist and I enjoyed the songs I heard from them! But, I listened more carefully to the whole album a few times over the past week and I really enjoyed it! It was actually quite a bit more serious than I expected, which I’m a fan of… But overall, it’s quite varied. It’s Jazzy, it’s Funky, it’s got a pop flare to it… but it’s also got some progressive undertones due to the classical/technical training that both JiaJia and Warren have… So yea, we’re going to listen to the album, and a long form interview where I went Behind the Boards to learn about the history and the future of Ginger Beef! They’re talented, they’re technical… but they’re fun, AND FUNKY! And you can catch them LIVE at the Palomino Upstairs later today, June 21st - at 4pm!! That’s a FREE SHOW!! ! And… as mentioned, you can also catch JiaJia speaking about self-releasing your music at the Central Library - she’s a panelist for the conference that you can attend at 11:00am FOR FREE … it’s called “DIY Discography: How to Self-Release Your Album” And that Conference is being moderated by Jess Arcand from Take Aim Media, and Reverie - a brand new MONTHLY magazine that’s showcasing local music right here in the City of Calgary!
