Hi Friend,

This past month was a sad one for CJSW and the broader Calgary music community.  Our dear friend and colleague, Dr. Paula Fayerman, passed away on Thursday, February 15th after a brief illness.

As many long-time listeners of CJSW know, Paula hosted the Noise program every Thursday night from 8:30pm-10pm. For the past 31+ years, Paula hosted Noise and shared her deep love of music and community with our listenership. Paula always filled her show with music and sounds that could be heard nowhere else but on Noise. Through her years of broadcasting and championing of local creative communities, Paula’s impact on the local avant garde and experimental music scene is beyond calculation.

Paula also had a profound influence on the sound of CJSW as she probably trained more CJSW programmers than just about anyone else in our station’s history. Paula’s innate kindness, enthusiasm and passion were qualities that she readily shared with many different generations of CJSW volunteers, staff and listeners.

Our sincere condolences go out to her partner, Doug Harkness, and all her family and friends for the loss of such a remarkable person. Many thanks to Steve Russell for doing an outstanding job covering hosting duties on Noise for Paula over the past few months. Going forward, Steve will be continuing to host this timeslot on Thursday nights, so be sure to tune in.

Speaking of Steve Russell, he and fellow CJSW programmer, Miguel Venexen and a host of other CJSW volunteers created a special memorial episode commemorating Paula’s amazing contributions that aired on March 7th. If you missed this episode live on 90.9FM, you can check it out here. This memorial episode was an example of community broadcasting at its finest.

Thank you for everything, Paula… We love and miss you!
